PNG to WEBP
Convert PNG to WebP to reduce file size.
What is WebP?
WebP is an image file format that provides both lossy compression and lossless compression (reversible compression). It is derived from the image encoding format VP8 and is considered a sister project of the WebM multimedia format. It was developed by Google after purchasing On2 Technologies. Released under the terms of the BSD license.
The maximum number of pixels supported by WebP is 16383x16383. Lossy compressed WebP only supports 8-bit YUV 4:2:0 format. The lossless compression (reversible compression) WebP supports VP8L encoding and 8-bit ARGB color space. Both lossy and lossless compression support Alpha transparency channel, ICC color configuration, and XMP interpretation data.
WebP has both static and dynamic modes. Dynamic WebP (Animated WebP) supports lossy and lossless compression, ICC color configuration, XMP interpretation data, and Alpha transparent channel.
What are the advantages of WEBP over PNG and JPG?
The advantage of WebP is that it has a better image data compression algorithm, which can bring a smaller image size, and has the same image quality as the naked eye; it also has lossless and lossy compression modes, Alpha transparency, and animation. Features, conversion effects on both JPEG and PNG are excellent, stable and uniform.
When WebP compresses JPG to 90% of the quality of the original image, the image size is reduced by about 50%. When WebP compresses JPG to 80% of the quality of the original image, the image size is reduced by 60% to 80%.
The reason for the superior compression performance of lossy WebP over JPG is mainly due to its advanced predictive coding technique and the improvement in compression efficiency due to macroblock adaptive quantization, while Boolean arithmetic coding improves the compression performance by 5% to 10% compared to Hoffman coding.
According to Google's earlier tests, WebP's lossless compression reduces the file size by 45% compared to PNG files found on the web, and even if these PNG files are processed with PNGCRUSH and PNGOUT, WebP can still reduce the file size by 28%. As it currently stands, Webp can reduce image size by an average of 70%. WebP is the development trend of the future picture format.
